The aim of the course is to develop a good understanding of the central issues of the law of competition by studying it primarily from the point of view of EC law, including the degree to which decentralisation of its enforcement to Member States can take place. There will also, by way of background, be references to US antitrust law and to UK competition law (especially in the light of its reform following the Competition Act 1998). The course will also contain an introduction to the economics of competition, as some degree of understanding of these principles is necessary for a proper appreciation of the case-law. Competition law procedure and enforcement, the rules on state aids and mergers and the central aspects joint ventures will be considered in the Lent Term. |
