The IME Graduate School at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) started on April 1st, 2004.
In their first year of study, the graduate school students take several obligatory courses as well as optional courses. Obligatory courses aim to introduce students from different fields to an overall vision of "Information Management and Market Engineering". Optional courses focus more on concrete topics under the common umbrella.
To guarantee the interdisciplinary orientation, each student has two supervisors, who are professors from different disciplines. Besides, a mentor is also designated to one students to assist him/her with detailed issues. Every student is highly encouraged to discuss and cooperate with other students, his or her mentor as well as the supervisors.
To ensure this, various kinds of academic activities are provided by the graduate school or even organized by the students themselves. For example, by the end of every semester, an IME colloquium will be held as a summary of that semester and an outlook of the coming semester. All professors and students meet together, share the newest progress from students and discuss next step work as well. Moreover, self-organized seminars (SOS) are organized by the students for exchanging new ideas and cooperate in small teams.
